about

I learned the first jig from the playing of my parents, Dermy and Tara Diamond. My parents sourced the tune from a chance meeting with an elderly former resident of Ayle House, a country house near Feakle in East Clare. According to the story, on hearing of their interest in music, the old lady proudly showed them the jig notated in Francis O’Neill’s Music of Ireland (1903) and insisted upon playing it on her piano to allow them learn it by ear. The melody is closely related to the well-known piping jig Down the Back Lane.

The Tailor Small’s jig or Jackie Small’s jig as it is also known, comes from the family repertoire of the noted musician, researcher and broadcaster Jackie Small.Tailoring was the Small family trade, hence the reference in the title. The tune was first revealed to wider audiences when recorded by De Dannan on the classic but now hard-to-find album Selected Jigs, Reels and Songs (Decca, 1977) . I don’t remember ever consciously learning the tune, most likely I acquired it by osmosis as it was one of my parents’ favourites during my childhood years.
