about

The Irish Washerwoman / The Kesh Jig

Danny: Like our hornpipes in Track 2, these are very common tunes which we’ve tried to subtly re-make. Our Irish Washerwoman is based on Danny Meehan’s version; Danny is a brilliant Donegal-London fiddler, a force of nature and an inspiration. We started with his wonderful take on the Irish Washerwoman, altered it a little further, and played it in an open G tuning. Then we follow with a version of probably the most-commonly played Irish jig, The Kesh, based on the playing of John J. Kimmel, German-American melodeon virtuoso of the early 20th century.

Conor: Since his return to Ireland in 2010, Danny Meehan has reinvigorated fiddle playing in county Donegal. His back of finding new ways to interpret classic repertoire is inspirational and we've tried to capture some of that in this set.
