about

The Road to Glenlough / John Doherty’s Quare Waltz

Danny: The Road to Glenlough is probably the best tune ever named for a road that doesn't exist. Supposedly the great Donegal fiddler James Byrne, came up with the name as a joke in the middle of a wild fiddle session in the (in)famous Biddy's Bar in Glencolmcille. The second tune is John Doherty’s Quare Yoke, a name I first heard from our friend, fiddler Mícheál Cherry. As you’ll hear, the name is entirely appropriate.

Conor: In my teenage years I attended workshops over the winter months with the legendary Glencolmcille fiddler James Byrne, from whom I learned the first tune. His long-time student and friend Mick Brown was my source for the second waltz. I owe a great debt to both men for their generosity  and encouragement over the years.
